This little horse stands with the same quiet confidence I remember from the apple-spotted toys of my childhood. I painted its coat with bright red apples to echo that Slavic tradition of the “apple-spotted” horse, a joyful motif that once appeared on wooden figures, holiday charms, and festival souvenirs. At the same time, I liked weaving in the broader idea of the dappled horse, a creature admired far beyond Slavic culture for its elegance and its role as a symbol of luck, movement, and vitality.
I shaped the mane and tail with soft lilac lines, then carved and painted each strand by hand to create a gentle flow of texture. Each apple is brushed separately, which gives the surface its lively rhythm and makes the little figure feel cheerful and curious. I gave it a clear blue eye because I wanted it to look as if it is quietly taking in the world, alert yet friendly.
For me, apple-spotted and dappled horses carry a sense of protection and good fortune, something that fits beautifully with winter traditions and the time of giving. With the Lunar Year approaching, I also liked the idea of creating a small figure that can accompany these seasonal celebrations, adding a touch of color and folklore to any home.
This horse is a piece where craft, memory, and playful imagination come together, made to bring a bit of brightness to the shelf, the table, or the holiday season.
